What is the difference between a Holding tank and a Septic tank?

A holding tank does not allow any of its contents to leach away into the ground, whereas a septic tank will allow waste water to run through a leaching field and for the bacterial breakdown of some of its solid contents.

How often will I need to have my Holding or Septic tank pumped?

Holding tanks need to be pumped depending on the water / waste water usage of a given residence and the size of the tank. Most are equipped with alarms, and will require a pumping shortly thereafter. Failure to pump a holding tank will lead to waste water backing up into the house. Often Holding tanks need to be pumped every 6-8 weeks.

Septic Tanks will need to be pumped depending on the size of the tank and generally the number of occupants. For many this will mean pumping a septic tank once every 3-4 years. Since septic tanks are more complex than holding tanks, we have created a web page devoted entirely to providing you with information as to how Septic tanks work and how to care for them.
